Development[]

It was confirmed in September 2016 that The CW was putting into development a reboot of the popular 1980s series Dynasty, whose pilot would be penned by Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. Schwartz and Savage also teamed up with Revenge writer and producer Sallie Patrick, along with married original Dynasty series creators Esther Shapiro and Robert Shapiro.[12] On January 27, 2017, The CW granted the reboot a pilot order.[13]

Casting[]

Three days after the network ordered Dynasty to pilot, The Vampire Diaries alum Nathalie Kelley was cast in the role of Cristal.[14] On February 10, Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll and Victorious actress Elizabeth Gillies was confirmed for the role of Fallon Carrington, the protagonist of the reboot.[15] The following week, Sam Adegoke was cast as Jeff Colby.[16] On February 24, Robert Christopher Riley was set to portray Culhane as a series regular.[17] Grant Show joined the main cast for the role of Blake Carrington in early March.[18] Additionally, The O.C. alum Alan Dale was tapped to portray Anders, the butler of Carrington Manor.[19] On March 8, Rafael de la Fuente joined the pilot cast to play Sam,[20] and on March 22, Brianna Brown was announced for the role of Claudia in the pilot.[21] In August, it was revealed that her character would recur throughout the first season.[22]

On November 10, 2017, Rick Hearst announced on Twitter that he booked a role for the twelfth episode of the first season.[23] On November 15, Gossip Girl alumna Kelly Rutherford was added to the recurring cast to play Melissa Daniels.[24] During the following week, Hakeem Kae-Kazim was set to recur as Cesil Colby.[25] On November 28, Desperate Housewives alumna Nicollette Sheridan was cast in the series regular role of Alexis Carrington.[26] On January 12, 2018, J.R. Cacia was set to recur as Rick Morales.[27]

On May 15, 2018, Nicollette Sheridan was promoted to series regular status for the upcoming second season.[28] The following month, Nathalie Kelley surprisingly announced that she would not be returning to the series after her character's death in the season one finale. When asked about Cristal's fate in the second season, Kelley responded, "Is it a coma? Is it death?...I actually don't know. But I know that I'm not going back to Atlanta in July, that I'm staying [in LA]...I've got my life back."[29] On August 6, Ana Brenda Contreras joined the cast of the second season as the "real Cristal Flores."[30] Eight days later, Australian actress Maddison Brown joined the main cast to portray Kirby Anders.[31] The week after, The Ranch actress Sharon Lawrence signed on to portray Liam Ridley's mother in a recurring capacity.[32] On September 24, Michael Masini also joined the recurring cast.[33]

On November 9, 2018, James Mackay announced that he would be departing from the series as a regular; however, he would be returning for a couple of episodes later in the second season.[34] Additionally, on February 26, 2019, Nicollette Sheridan announced that she would be departing the series in the upcoming March 22 episode, much to the shock of many fans.[35] It was also reported on March 22 that E.R. alumna Michael Michele joined the cast in the role of Dominique Deveraux.[36]

On July 29, 2019, it was reported that Ana Brenda Contreras had departed the role of Cristal Jennings and would be replaced by Daniella Alonso.[37] On August 13, Rafael de la Fuente confirmed on Instagram that Kelly Rutherford would briefly reprise her role in season three.[38] Ken Kirby joined the season in the role of Evan Tate on September 5.[39]

On October 11, 2019, Daniella Alonso, Michael Michele, Sam Underwood, and Adam Huber were all promoted to series regulars.[40] On October 28, The Parent Trap alumna Elaine Hendrix, who previously worked with Elizabeth as co-stars on FX series Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll, joined in the starring role of new Alexis Carrington.[41] The following month, Rafael de la Fuente announced that singer-songwriter Ashanti would make an appearance in the upcoming November 8 episode.[42] On February 28, 2020, Wil Traval signed on to portray the role of Father Caleb Collins.[43]

On February 9, 2021, Luke Cook was cast in the recurring role of Oliver Noble.[44] It was also announced in March that Daniel di Tomasso would reprise his role as Fletcher Myers in the fourth season.[45] In August 2021, it was revealed that Alan Dale would not be returning to the series as a regular.[46] On August 19, 2021, British actress Eliza Bennett joined the cast in the recurring role of Amanda Carrington for the fourth season, before being upgraded to a series regular for the fifth season.[1]

Filming[]

Filming for the pilot took place in Atlanta, Georgia from March 21 to April 3, 2017.[47] There was a casting call for background actors for the roles of house and kitchen staff, stylists, and photographer assistants.[48] After The CW picked Dynasty up to series, filming for the rest of the season began in July.[49] In September, CBS Studios briefly shut down production due to the state of emergency issue for Hurricane Irma.[50]

In March 2020, The CW shut down production on the majority of the network's series, Dynasty one of them, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[51] Consequently, the originally-planned remaining two episodes of the season were scrapped, and episode twenty served as the season finale.[52] Filming for the fourth season began on September 26, 2020 and wrapped on July 26, 2021.[53][54]

Broadcast and promotion[]

On May 10, 2017, The CW ordered Dynasty to series for the 2017-18 season.[55] On May 18, the day of the CW Upfronts, the first official trailer for Dynasty was released, and was set given a post-Riverdale Wednesday at 8:00 PM slot as part of the fall lineup.[56] On June 8, it was announced that the series would premiere on Wednesday, October 11, following the highly-anticipated season two premiere of Riverdale.[57]

On June 22, 2017, Netflix acquired global streaming rights to the reboot to distribute to all territories outside of the United States.[58] The CW released the first promotional photos for the series in late August.[59] On November 8, 2017, The CW gave Dynasty a full-season order of nine additional episodes, bringing the first season to a total of 22 episodes.[60]

On January 7, 2018, it was announced that Dynasty would be moving from its Wednesday slot to Friday nights at 8:00 PM prior to Jane the Virgin on March 9.[61] On April 2, 2018, The CW renewed the series for a second season.[62]

The CW renewed Dynasty for a third season on January 31, 2019, along with a number of other series.[3] On May 25, 2019, Josh Reims took over as new showrunner beginning with the third season, succeeding co-creator Sallie Patrick.[63]

On January 7, 2020, The CW renewed the series for a fourth season.[4]

On February 3, 2021, three months prior to the season four premiere, the network also renewed Dynasty for a fifth season.[5]

Reception[]

Critical reception[]

The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported an 88% approval rating with an average rating of 6.25/10 based on 8 reviews. Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 54 out of 100 based on 4 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".

Chris Harnick of E! Online called the pilot "soapy and fun," adding that the series is "a worthy heir to the original show and Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage's previous offering Gossip Girl and The O.C.". Tierney Bricker, also from E! Online, also praised the show, dubbing Kelley "this season's breakout star", with Gillies "hot on her Louboutin heels".
