Development[]

In 2004, it was announced that Cecily von Ziegesar's Gossip Girl novel series was being adapted into a film penned by Gilmore Girls developer Amy Sherman-Palladino, which would follow Blair Waldorf as the protagonist, played by Lindsay Lohan. After the movie deal fell through, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage decided that they wanted to bring Gossip Girl to television instead, and Warner Bros. won rights to the series.[7] Schwartz and Savage finalized the pilot script in December 2006.[8] On January 3, 2007, the project was greenlit to series by The CW.[9] Dawn Ostroff, The CW's entertainment chief at the time, commented, "We knew we wanted to go after 18-to-34-year-old women and do scripted content that was going to be bold. Gossip Girl fit so many of the characteristics that we were looking for."[10]
