Katy Keene is a musical drama television series that ran on The CW from February 6 to May 14, 2020. It is the second spin-off series of Riverdale, succeeding Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
Katy Keene was picked up to series on May 7, 2019.[1] On January 7, 2020, one month prior to the series premiere, thirteen additional scripts were ordered for a potential second season.[2] On July 2, 2020, The CW cancelled the series after one season.[3]
Summary
Riverdale spinoff follows the lives and loves of four iconic Archie Comics characters — including fashion legend-to-be Katy Keene — as they chase their twenty something dreams in New York City. Musical dramedy chronicles the origins and struggles of the aspiring artists trying to make it on Broadway, on the runway and in the recording studio.[1]

Production
Development
On August 6, 2018, Riverdale showrunner first announced that another spin-off series, in addition to Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, was being put into works at The CW.[4] On January 23, 2019, it was announced that the spin-off was ordered to pilot and would be titled Katy Keene.[5]
Casting
On February 4, 2019, Deadline Hollywood revealed that Ashleigh Murray would reprise her role as Josie McCoy of Riverdale in the spin-off.[6] On February 22, Jonny Beauchamp and Julia Chan were cast as Jorge Lopez and Pepper Smith, respectively;[7] and on February 26, Camille Hyde and Lucien Laviscount were cast as Alexandra and Alexander Cabot.[8]
On March 11, 2019, it was announced that award-winning television actress Lucy Hale would headline the spin-off as the lead role.[9] On March 26, Zane Holtz and Katherine LaNasa were also added as series regulars.[10]
Filming
Filming for the pilot began on March 13, 2019.[11] Two months later, on May 7, Katy Keene was officially picked up by The CW for a 13-episode first season.[12]
Production on remaining twelve episodes of the first season began in September 2019, and concluded in February 2020.[13]
Reception
Critical response
On August 4, 2019, a three-minute extended trailer was released, and gained mostly positive reviews.[14]
The series, overall, has received an average Tomatometer score of 91 percent.[15] As of June 28, 2020, the average audience score for the first season of Katy Keene on Rotten Tomatoes is 81 percent with 67 user ratings.[16]

The first season received sub-average ratings in the 18-49 demographic, with an average rating of 0.1 and 480 thousand viewers per episode.
